Ballroom Dance Instruction - How to Become a Good Follower on the Dance Floor

To experience a great dance partnership, it is just as important to develop following skills as it is to develop leading skills. Therefore the myth: "All I need is a good leader, and I can follow anything" - is only partly true. Only if we have good following skills can the leader dance with power and strength - thus allowing the couple to maintain balance and control and assuring that both partners enjoy the dance.Frequently you will hear the man (also referred to as the leader) say: "Stop trying to lead - just follow.



" Well that works only if the lady (also known as the follower) knows "how" and "what" to follow.There are two basic aspects to following:The "How" - Developing our Frame and Connection The "What" - Focusing on the difference between "intent" and "movement"Developing Our Frame and Connection - Smooth Dances (Closed Position)The actual frame (or closed position) is made up of three points of contact - a triangle between the couple:1. The lady places her right hand in the man's left hand.2. The man places his, Ballroom Dancing Products, right hand on the lady's left shoulder blade3.



The lady places her left hand just below the man's right shoulder.This triangle has a closed side and an open side. It is important here to point out that the follower should resist "falling" to the right or open side of the triangle. This can be corrected by becoming aware of keeping our "block" - (hips, ribcage and shoulders - aligned and head over the left wrist.) Also check that your right toe is not turned in.The "connection" is a little bit more illusive and complex than building the frame or embrace.



First, let's discard the notion that we should give the man "resistance." Instead, the follower should concentrate on holding the elbows slightly in front of the hips, and the hands forward and upward at all times. Another really important aspect of the connection is activating the "core". (If you have participated in palates classes, you are aware of your core; if not, work on strengthening your stomach and sternum so that you are following through your center - thus assisting you in holding your "block" and arms in one piece.



) In the next section "intent and movement", we will continue to talk about the arms and elbows and suggest a simple exercise.Focusing on the difference between "Intent" and "Movement"When the leader is preparing to move forward, he will first compress his supporting foot downwards. This, in turn will begin adding pressure to his upper body, thus indicating an intent to move the lady backward. Take note here that this should simply "indicate an intent" to the lady. This is the critical point where many followers misread the lead.



Once they feel this intent - they instantly move. Instead, when the lady feels, Ballroom Dancing Products, the intent, she should stay on her supporting foot and compress towards the man until he commences to move. This is worth repeating. Do not move when you feel the pressure or "intent" to move; rather, stay on the supporting foot and press forward (and upward) and wait for the actual movement.Simple ExerciseAt this time, we will again discuss the lady's core, arms and shoulders. When the man is indicating intent, many times the follower will collapse the elbows and/or shoulders.



(Remember the follower's role is to simply hold her own body forward in one solid piece.) To understand this concept, try this simple exercise:Stand with your feel about 9" from a wall or closed door - weight towards the balls of the feet. Bring your sternum forward (slightly separating your ribcage) and place your hands on the door or wall. Notice you are simply supporting your own body - not really pressing the door. This is how comfortable your body should feel when you are in dance position.



Just simply stay forward and support your own weight. It is important to impress upon the follower that this position does not make you feel heavy - but rather gives the leader the leverage to move forward with power and confidence.These concepts require a little thought and practice; but when you finally understand "how" and "what" to follow, both you and your partner will enjoy the dance!

Ballroom Dance - An Unlikely Recipe For Physical Rehabilitation, One Step at a Time

Fractures, herniated discs, and post traumatic stress were just a few of the problems I faced after an accident, Ballroom Dancing Products, . I was devastated when I could no longer work. I was in pain all of the time from the damage to my spine.For the first 6 years after my accident I listened to the doctors "don't lift anything over 5 pounds Don't irritate the nerves in your spine." After years of going to physical therapists, pain centers, neurologists, and orthopedic surgeons I took matters into my own hands.



I already had vast knowledge of exercise and knew what triggered my symptoms. I began to experiment with body weight exercises and light dumbbells. I made some progress, but I still, Ballroom Dancing Products, had terrible pain every day.When I began to write my Swing Set Fitness books I performed some of the swing exercises and I was shocked at how much I was able to do. Swing Set Fitness helped me with upper and lower body strength. I finally started to feel alive again.I made tremendous gains with strength and with my overall well-being, but I was looking for something more.



I needed a physical activity that would help with low body coordination and balance, but it had to be safe for me. And it had to fit my personality. Was there such a thing?When I saw "Dancing with the Stars" I was curious as to whether I should give ballroom dance a try. I knew there would be limitations with my spine. I took ballet for many years, was a gymnast, and a gymnastics coach since 1978. I was definitely no stranger to movement. As I watched the stars dance I saw some things that would not work for me, but I also saw enough that made me say, "Why not?



!"I still had to be careful in order to prevent more damage to my spine, but I needed to try this. It would be the first time I have attempted movement in a non-controlled environment. All of my physical rehabilitation from the accident was in controlled environments such as physical therapy offices or my own home. I knew taking a ballroom dance class would be very risky because the movements would be decided by my dance partner and my environment would not be controlled. A bump from another couple or a fall could cause serious problems to an already damaged body.



So I took the chance knowing that I could stop and leave the class if necessary. The backwards walking was a real challenge for me. I did not have the coordination, speed, or balance for most of the basic steps I attempted. And dancing on a crowded dance floor was truly nerve racking. I was terrified that I would crash into someone, but I had to trust my dance partner to guide me safely. I got through the first class and went in for a second, third, and fourth. It was a challenge, mentally and physically.



The ballroom dance classes have been amazing physical therapy for my low body. And even better, there was moderate rather than intense pain after most of the classes.And here's a thought... I would not perform that many low back kicks (back extensions), leg (quad) extensions, or hip flexor contractions during any single exercise session. And who would want to count that high when exercising! I had no idea how great the fox trot, tango, and waltz are for improving low body strength and coordination until I started to learn them.



And it is a different strength than ballet or other forms of dance. Ballroom dance has provided the missing component to my low body physical rehabilitation. After taking about ten classes I have noticed that my balance has improved and I am more coordinated.Physical therapists should consider assigning ballroom dance to some of their patients for low body coordination, balance, speed, and strength. The reaching back with the foot for the backward step is a similar motion to a low back kick (hip extension).



As the female transfers her weight and propels her body backwards, she performs quadriceps and hip flexor contractions. And ballroom dance is sure to help people with posture. However when starting out consider the social aspect of group learning which most people find stimulating, challenging and lots of fun.



Group classes are also less expensive.7. There are no special clothes for social dancing, except that they need to be comfortable and give you freedom to move. However for learning professional ballroom dancing you may find that exercise clothing is more appropriate, ask your instructor if you are unsure. The most important factor is that they must be comfortable and not tight on your feet. If your feet are aching, you'll soon be unable to focus on anything else. The dance floor itself plays a part in the comfort level of your feet. Derived from the Latin word ballare, which means to dance, ballroom dancing is performed by a pair with one person leading the other.
